Get up, move, and stretch

By: Aileen Baxter

Most of us spend a lot of our day sitting down.  Hours can go by while we sit without moving and it can be easy to forget that our bodies like a little shake up every now and then.  Even if you jog in the morning or work out that still doesn’t counteract the negative impact of prolonged sitting.  Each day for a week, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, break up your working day by following this little stand, stretch and walk exercise.1. Stand up, straighten your back and stretch your arms2. Pay attention to the feelings of your body as you stretch and relax your arms.  Focus on the tension and release in your joints and muscles 3. Take a short walk away from your workspace, as you do this think of this short exercise as though it is a reset button on your body4. Return to your desk, fresh and enlivened. Even if your job involves a lot of movement, giving yourself a little stretch, walk and reset is still a good way to keep fresh and keep your mind in the present.  Paying more attention to the needs of the body in the middle of a busy working day helps you appreciate what your body does for you and increases work efficiency.
